Project 1: Partner Collaboration

Wed Jul 15, 2009, 1:37 AM
*For Insightfulminds group only!*
Partner Collab

For this Project for InsightfulMinds we are going to get a little practice and taste of what some animators do at studios. Animation is a group job and requires cooperation at the best. Each person is assigned jobs in which they must do their best on. There are jobs such as character animation. This can be assigned to different people depending on the studio and the amount of characters. From my experience at The Art Institute we were given these same tasks and had to animate the characters we were given that will sometimes have to interact with another’s.

The whole point of this is to try something similar to that job, but without the animation. You will group with one other partner, if there is an uneven amount of people you can ask to join another group and it will have three people collaborating in that group instead of two, and both of you can draw one of your own characters, fan characters, objects, etc. Hell even some graphic designs can work in some interaction with the other person’s character. You draw just your character, design, whatever not the other person’s. The characters HAVE to be interacting with another physically in some way, otherwise it would be too easy to just simply drawing the characters just standing there and digitally placing them in the same area.

Notice the difference between the dos and don’ts?

How does this benefit you?

For those wanting to get into animations, even sequential art (comics) and sometimes large illustrations, this will be a great practice for you to learn to cooperate with another artist with a different style, taste, and attitude, cause trust me going at it with out in preparation is HELL…I KNOW! It also helps you with properly thinking and planning out ideas, helps practice with poses, creative thinking, responsibility, patience and a respect for another person’s art style. Lots of GOODIES!

Helpful Tips on Getting started.

1. First thing is to already have or develop a character for this assignment and share to your partner who you are going to use for this project and their bio.

2. Coming up with ideas together that you BOTH can agree on. This can be pretty tricky but that is one of the points for this project.

3. Sketching out an idea. BOTH artists must sketch out their idea be it a good sketch or bad you still must sketch out otherwise it would be a one sided ordeal. And where is the fun/challenge in that?

4. *Agreeing and drawing out your characters for the collab picture. This can be very difficult, it does NOT have to be perfect, this is for practice and will take a lot of trial and error. The best suggestion I can make is to show your progress to your partner. Digitally put them together to test how it is looking so far. And show to the other person. Light boxes work well too. It’s even better if you can draw with the partner in person.

5. Once everything is settled, ink and clean up your character and bring them in *digitally and put them together.

6. Once that is done you may send them to me through messenger and I will put them ALL together in one big piece.

7. This is optional but as far as color for the huge piece, I haven’t decided yet whether I will color the whole damn monster (as long as you provide a color ref of you character), or send the file back to everyone to color their own character…or both…or just no color at all (see how confused I am on that part XD)

More tips

Keep in contact with your partner, you won’t believe how problematic this can be if you don’t do this..

Be nice, and be tolerant of each other.

DON’T BE BIGHEADED. As artists there are a few of use that want to take full control over a project, that is not accepted in professional fields and can cause a project to go into a big mess and would kill the fun and motivation. At the same time..

DON’T BE TOO PASSIVE. You are working on this as well and you should say what you want as well to a final agreement.

PG-13 please, since this is going to be posted on Deviant Art PG13 or at least what DA will allow cause no I’m not afraid of mature art, but the last thing I want is hard work to be deleted from the paranoid site..

Have FUN!

*If you do not know how to digitally put two pictures together buzz me on Messenger or note me on DA =Astrozerk04
